Rainwater Harvesting Process

Rainwater harvesting is the collection of water that would otherwise have gone down the drain, be soaked into the ground or be lost through evaporation. Rainwater harvesting systems comprise of storage tanks, filters and pumps. Rain is collected from roofs and driveways and fed into a storage system and cleaned. There are four stages of cleaning rainwater (see below).

Water collected can be used for many purposes except drinking. This includes:

  • Outside taps
  • Washing cars
  • Watering the garden
  • Flushing the toilet
  • Filling washing machines

There are four stages of cleaning rainwater:

1. Filter:

Water runs from gutters and down pipes and meets the first rainwater filter. The dirty water and leaves are expelled as waste via an outlet to a soak away or catch pit.

2. Calmed inlet:

The clean water enters the storage tank via an inlet. The calmed inlet lets water into the tank without disturbing sediment or mixing up the rainwater.

3. Overflow siphon:

Floating pollen and debris exits the tank, via an overflow, as waste. These are rodent proof.

4. Floating pump intake:

Water is pumped from the tank and is taken from just below the water surface where the clean water lies.
